DON’T SIT ON THE FENCE

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. (Revelation 3:15-16). Nothing annoys God like people who don’t know where they stand; people who are one leg here, one leg there. It is worse when those people are believers who don’t want to fully identify with the savior. In church, they are churchy and holy but at home, work, they are like carnal people doing things unbelievers do. When troubles come, they try God and also try other alternatives. This is wrong! The letter in Revelations 3 was written to a church in Laodicea. It was not written to unbelievers. That is to show you that God is angry with people in church who are still sitting on the fence; those who are neither hot nor cold.

Everywhere in scripture, God calls for total commitment to Him from those who want to serve Him. And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.” (I Kings 18:21). This led to the killing of the prophets of baal because God was jealous. That day, the children of Israel made up their minds to serve the only true God.

Beloved, on which side of the fence are you; On God’s side or on the world’s side? “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” (James 4:4). If you keep sitting on the fence, the enemy will still get you. Make up your mind today and serve God.

OKEZIE

(...continued...)

It came like a bombshell. The poor woman moped at him, mouth agape, short of words. It was not what she expected to hear.
“Did you hear me?” Okezie asked after a while of silence.
“I heard you but I don’t understand. You stole? How? Why?”
“Aunty it was the devil o.”
  “Tell me exactly what happened.”
Okezie told her the full story from how he met Nkechi, how Ebuka advised him to take money to impress Nkechi, how he was caught and arrested. When he was done, his aunty kept quiet for a while, then said to him, “You got yourself into all these just because of a girl?”
“Aunty I don’t know how it happened.”
“Did she use juju on you? If she say she doesn’t want you, why didn’t you let her be. There must be other girls who like you. I know some of them around here. What of Cynthia, Ciro, Ogechi…”
“Aunty I know. I totally regret going that far.”
She sighs then says, “you are lucky you confessed and gave them back their money.”
  “Yes o. I felt bad.”
  “So they fired you?”
“No ma. They suspended me for six weeks.”
  “They are good people o.”
“Yes aunty. I think it is God giving me a second chance.”
“Now what will you do with this six weeks?”
“I don’t know aunty. If I stay here, people will notice that I don’t go to work and will start asking more questions.”
  “Then go to the village.”
  “And stay with grandma alone?”
“That’s the only option you have right now. Unless you will leave in the morning and come back in the evening.”
  “I will try it.”
  “Okay.”
She got up to leave and asks him, “what about feeding? Do you have food stuffs?”
Okezie scratched his head and hesitated in answering.
“That means you don’t have,” she said. “You will eat in my house this night. Come later.”
  “Thank you aunty.”
She opened the door to leave.
“Aunty please don’t tell anybody what I told you o.”
“What do you take me for? I will just tell those who ask that you were set up. The truth is between me and you.”
  “Thank you ma.”
She walked away. He went back and checked his food store. he was running short of food stuff but what was left could last him a week or two depending on how he manages it. Thus he made up his mind to stay in the town for a while, going out every morning and coming back in the evening. He totally disliked the idea of going to stay in the village for six whole weeks.
That night, he went to the aunty’s house. Her children who were around asked him what happened. He just told thm that he was set up, they felt sorry for him and the matter closed. He ate there and as he was leaving, she gave him some food stuff and condiments to add to the ones he had at home.

OKEZIE

(...continued...)

When his neighbours saw him, they came to him. He knew they wanted to know what had happened so he braced himself to answer their questions. If he made any attempt to evade being question, some will not give up, while others would go about with a wrong assumption and paint him black.
“What happened?” Mama Ciro asked him.
“Mama it was a set up o.”
“Set up how?” another person asked. “What did they say you did?”
“They said I stole money from where I work.”
“I hope they did not hurt you.”
  “My God vindicated me.”
“Wicked people. They are looking for a way to send you out.”
“I wonder o,” Okezie said and walked in.
  “Don’t mind them you hear.”
  “Thank you.”
Okezie went into his room and locked himself in. He thought about his life and what he had just done. Thoughts of Nkechi went through his mind and he felt dislike for her. He shook his head and forced himself to think about something else. Before long, he fell asleep. Almost immediately, he heard a tap on his door. It sounded like the person wasn’t confident in knocking. He turned the other side on his bed. The knock came again. He got up angrily, hissed and opened the door. He saw Ebuka standing outside looking remorseful. He immediately banged the door and locked it.
“O.k.” Ebuka called him. “Please open the door. I am sorry.”
Okezie ignored him and lay on his bed. Ebuka called and knocked for a while and then walked away. Okezie hissed and closed his eye. He slept off. The next knock that woke him up was his aunty’s knock on the door in the evening. He stired, got up and peeped through the window. Then he opened the door.
  “aunty good evening.”
“ehe,” she answered as she entered his room. She stood by the door and observed Okezie for a while. Then she asks him, “what is it that I am hearing?”
“What aunty?” Okezie asked, pretending not to know what she was driving at.
  “That you were arrested today.”
“Aunty it is a long story o.”
“I have all day. Tell me what haooened.” She sat down and waited.
A thousand thoughts ran through Okezie’s mind.
‘what should I tell her now?’ he thought.
He couldn’t bring himself to lie because of how close she was to him. She was like a mother to him and one of his stunch support in the town. On the other hand, if he told her the truth, he wasn’t sure what would be her reaction.
“I am waiting.” She said and interrupted his thoughts. “Or you don’t want to tell me?”
  “It is not that aunty.”
“Then say something because I am not going anywhere till I hear what happened.”
                He told her the truth.
“Aunty I stole money in my office.”

It came like a bombshell. The poor woman moped at him, mouth agape, short of words. It was not what she expected to hear.

SEE YOURSELF THE RIGHT WAY

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. (Judges 6:12). You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus! You are blessed and highly favoured! You are bought with a price, the precious blood of Jesus! You are the apple of God’s eye! You are wonderfully and fearfully made!

When these are your mindset, you will have nothing to do with inferiority complex. You will never be depressed for a day. You will never have a bad day when you realize this. Beloved, see yourself the right way; from the eyes of Father God not from the eyes of people or your circumstances. When the Angel met Gideon and addressed him as mighty man of valour, Gideon wondered whether it was him the Angel was talking to. He looked at himself and didn’t see anything mighty about himself. In fact he was in a place, hiding from the army of Midian when the angel came to him, he was from one of the least tribe in the nation, and the smallest in his own family. When Moses encountered God, he didn’t see himself as qualified to lead the exodus out of Egypt. “And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.” (Exodus 4:10).

These men and more didn’t see themselves as fit for the assignment but God still used them. He doesn’t choose the qualified; He qualifies the chosen. There is something God sees about you. You need to start seeing yourself from that perspective if you will reign over circumstances of life. God sees who you are created to be and not who you already are. So see what you can become and not what you already are. How you see yourself is what you eventually become. If you see a failure, you will remain a failure but if you see a sucees even in the midst of failure, one way or the other, you will find yourself out of failure, with time.

HIS STRENGTH IN YOUR WEAKNESS

And he said unto me, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9There are times when you come to the end of yourself; you have tried all you can but all to no avail; you meet people who should help you but nothing comes out of it. Beloved, this is when God steps in. His strength is made perfect in your weakness. Many times in the scriptures, the people of God faced situations which made them wonder whether God had abandoned them. Apostle Paul found himself in that situation at one point in his life. Three times, he asked God to take away the thorn in his flesh.

What do you do when you don’t know what else to do? Philippians 4:6-7 says, “but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” 1 Peter 5:7 also says, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” What you should do is to pray about the situation with all manner of prayers. Next is thanking Him in advance for the answer He is yet to give to your prayer. Then you let peace guard your heart by relaxing and refusing to fear or fret. Then you will see the Lord of Host manifest in that situation. When you are weak, that’s when He is strong. When you don’t know what else to do, give way because that’s when He shows Himself. He is a awesome God! He is never late! Just give way before it becomes late.

OKEZIE

(...continued...)

On the road to the office, the oga’s deputy who was in a separate vehicle from Okezie and the security men, put a call through to the oga and told him the situation. He didn’t fail to mention his observation and asked for leniency and a listening ear so they could find out why he did what he did and others who could be involved.
“It is ok but you don’t expect me to appear soft before that boy.”
“No sir. Be as tough as you can. I will be the one pressing for him to be heard.”
“Be here as soon as possible.”
Back at the office, everybody waited for the thief to arrive.
When Okezie was brought in, people scoffed and made side comments. The oga came out and asked him, “What where you thinking?”
“I am sorry sir.” Okezie said, with tears running down his cheek. “It was the devil.”
The oga asked for Okoro to be released and called Okezie into the inner office along with his deputy, secretary, accountant and few other senior staff. They closed the door behind them. The others who didn’t get the opportunity to go in stood outside the door and eavesdropped.
Inside the inner office, with shame in his countenance and remorse in his voice, Okezie told them the truth. He told them how he had fallen in love with Nkechi, had tried all he could to win her affection but failed, and was misguided by his friend to steal,.
“I deeply regret my actions,” he concluded. “I am sorry.”
The office secretary was the first to speak.
“So you stole this money to give to a girl?” she asked and burst into laughter.
The others followed suit and laughed.
“what a woman can do to a man is unspeakable,” the accountant said.
“It is not our fault,” the secretary answered.
Okezie was at a loss. He looked from one person to the other. It was the oga who called them to order.
“This is not a laughing matter at all.” He said. “You stole and you will pay for it. We will be lenient in your punishment because you did not run, you produced the stolen money and you came out with the truth without pressure.”
Okezie didn’t have the guts to beg for mercy. He was guilty and being in a discipline-oriented environment, he welcomed any punishment they would mete out on him.
“I will have you fired without any prosecution or imprisonment,” he said and asked the others what they thought.
After sampling opinions, they arrived at suspending him from the office for a six weeks without pay, after which he was free to resume if he wanted. He thanked them for letting him go. With the intercom, the oga gave orders to the security men to take him back to his house. Outside the office, nobody spoke to him. They just watched him pass by. Okoro met him in the car park with the security men but was so angry that he did not even look in his direction.
  “Okoro..” Okezie called.
“Why are you calling me?” Okoro asked. “You set me up.”
“You know I can’t do that. I may have taken what doesn’t belong to me, but I can’t frame you for it.”
“So where are they taking you to? To prison?”
  “No. to my house.”
  “so you will go free.”
  “I received suspension without pay.”
  “Hmm.”
Okezie entered the vehicle and they drove off.
When they got to his house, Okezie alighted and they drove off.

BE AN ANSWER

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16). There is a story told of two men that went to God in prayer and were in different needs. Both of them were kneeling close to each other on the altar. One man was praying, “Father, there is this contract of hundred million naira that I have been pursuing. Please give it to me.” The other man told God, “Lord if you can give me ten thousand naira for my children’s school fees, I will be grateful,” and he was talking loud. After a while, the first man stopped his own prayer and looked at the second man. Then he opened his wallet and brought out ten thousand naira and dropped it in front of the man. Then he touched the man, pointed at the money and told him, “God has answered your prayer, now you can go let me concentrate.” The second man took the money and left joyfully.

Most times, God does not throw down answers from heaven. He uses men to solve other people’s problems. Beloved, you are an answer to someone’s prayer. You have something that someone needs, something you could bless others with. The day you realize this, your life will take a new turn for the better. Some have need of jobs and you are in a position to connect them to job opportunities; some are in need of being counseled and guided and you have the time and ability to do that; when you are able to help others, please do so. When your light shines before men, they will glorify your God. If it is an unbeliever that you bless, he or she may want to follow you to your church and serve your God. That way, you will be bringing souls into the kingdom. God also has needs. In Ezekiel 22: 30, God said, “And I sought for a man among them that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” Be an answer to God’s need! Be an answer to the needs of people around you! Be a solution today!

OKEZIE

(...continued...)

Okezie sat on the bench in front of his house as he wondered what he would do about the situation he had found himself in.
“They will find out.” He said to himself and sighed.
When he saw Okoro’s call, one mind told him, ‘they have found out.’
His conscience started pricking him badly.
“Why did I do it?” he asked himself. He went inside, waiting for Ebuka to come and suggest what he should do next, since he was the architect of the whole thing. He kept peeping from his window to see if anyone was coming for him. He lay down but couldn’t rest. He got up and kept pacing his room.
“O..k” Ebuka called as he got close to the house.
Okezie hurriedly opened the door and pulled Ebuka in.
“What is the problem?” Ebuka asked him, puzzled.
“I think they have found out,” Okezie said jittery.
  “Found out what?”
  “That I took the money.”
“Did anybody see you taking it?”
“No but I have this feeling that they will trace it to me.”
  “Mcheew. Relax my friend.”
Ebuka sat down on his bed.
“Where is the money?” he asked.
  “I have it here.”
“You should be thinking about what to get for Nkechi now instead of they finding out.”
“Why did I listen to you?”
“Don’t put the blame on me o. Did I push you?”
A boy came and told okezie that some people were asking around for him and that some men on uniform were among them. Ebuka didn’t wait. He opened the door and zoomed off through an apian way by the side.
“You better take cover,” he told Okezie.
“Wait..” Okezie said to him but he was out of sight in no time.
Okezie decided not to run. He sat on the bench outside and waited for whoever they were that were looking for him. Soon, the oga’s deputy came with the security men and they walked towards his room.
“Don’t run o,” he shouted to Okezie.
Okezie just sat there and watched them come close.
  “Welcome sir,” he said.
“I thought you said you were sick?”
                Okezie sighed.
  “I am sorry sir,”
  “Where is the money?”
Okezie brought the money from his pocket and handed over to the oga’s deputy who took it and counted.
  “What made you steal it?”
  “Sir it’s the devil o.”
“You will follow us back to the office right away so you will explain to our Oga.”
  “Okay sir.”
He got up and followed them. The oga’s deputy followed behind wondering what kind of person Okezie was.
‘An average thief would not admit being guilty without pressure,’ he thought. ‘The young man knew we were coming and didn’t even make any attempt to escape. There must be something about this.’
When one of the security men hit Okezie from behind and said, “walk fast, olé,” he rebuked him sharply.
“Don’t touch him again,” he said. “Till we get to the office.”
When they were entering the car, Okezie sighted Ebuka who was watching from a distance.
“That is the person who got me into all this,” he said and pointed at Ebuka.

When Ebuka saw Okezie pointing at him and one of the security men, making advances at him, he ran. They left him, entered the vehicles and drove off, away from onlookers who wondered what Okezie had commited.

THE POWER OF YOUR MIND

Moreover the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond-tree. Then said Jehovah unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I watch over my word to perform it. (Jeremiah 1:11-12). Whatever happens to you is a result of what has already taken place in your mind. A man is made up of the body, the soul and the spirit. The soul of a man is made up of his mind, emotions and his will. The soul is the part of man that relates whatever thing happening in the spirit world to the physical world. A man is ruled by the things that come out of his heart. What happens in a man’s physical realm has already taken place in the mind-realm or intellect-realm. God cannot do anything without first establishing it in your mind.

A man’s thought is very important because your mind is your miracle factory. Whatever you think in your mind has the power to make you. No wonder Romans 12:2 says, “And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” God asked Jeremiah, “what seest thou?” It means God will not bring anything to pass in your life without you seeing it with the eyes of your mind. God said to Abraham, “As far as your eyes can see, I will give to you.” (Genesis 13:14-15).

Beloved, your mind works to bring about good or evil in your life. If you can’t change the things you don’t like happening to you, you can change your mind. If you can have victory in your mind, you can have victory over those things. When you change your mind, you can change everything about you.

OKEZIE

...continued

Soon his oga’s assistant came and he released Okezie to go. Okezie shivered and left amidst ‘sorry’ that everybody kept telling him. When he was far away from the office, he walked fast and kept looking back to know if someone was running after him to call him back. At the major road, he entered taxi drop back to his house.
When he was alone behind closed doors, he brought out the money and counted it. It was nine thousand five hundred naira. He thought about what to do with it, whether to give it to Nkechi like that or to buy something with it. After a while, he picked his ‘torch’ phone and called Ebuka who told him to hold on till he comes.
After Okezie left the office, office work continued as usual. No one noticed any wrong doing. Okoro help Okezie out as usual by cleaning his assigned section of the whole office and also doing Okezie’s section. The office accountant came later in the afternoon and that was when the missing money became an issue. He needed to take it to a bank and brought out the envelop. The envelop was not exactly how she left it the previous day. He was surprised. He hurriedly opened the envelop and counted the bundles, and noticed that some money was missing. It was then that he raised an alarm.
“Some money is missing from here,” he announced.
All the staff were shocked. They wondered what had happened to the money. The Oga came out.
“What is happening here?” he asked.
“I left some money in the drawer yesterday,” the accountant said. “Now it is not complete”
“Why didn’t you pay it in yesterday?” the oga asked.
“By the time we were true, it was late and I didn’t want to go home with it. So I left it in the drawer”
  “and you locked the drawer?”
  “I think I did.”
“Are you sure of what you are saying?”
  “Very sure sir.”
The Oga asked every staff one by one but they all denied knowing anything about the money.
“Who was the last to leave the office yesterday?” he asked.
The accountant accepted being the last. “I wanted to be sure no one else was left here because of the money I left behind,” he said.
“Then who was the first to come here today?”
“It is either Okezie or Okoro, the cleaners,” the secretary told him.
  “call them here,” he roared.
The junior staffs scampered out in search of the duo. Okoro was found in mama janet’s kiosk sipping dry gin. With the way he was told that oga was calling him, he threw away the gin and ran with them to answer the oga.
  “Sir..oga..good afternoon sir..” he stuttered.
“Where is Okezie?” oga asked ignoring his greeting.
“He went home early in the morning sir.”
  “Why?”
“He was sick so he left. I worked for him today. I cleaned everywhere for him today,” he added, trying to curry favour.
“Who permited him?” He looked around at the staff.
“I did,” his office assistant said. “He was so sick, I let him go.”
The oga turned back to Okoro and asked him, “You said you cleaned all the offices?”
                Okoro answered in the affirmative.
“Then you should know what happened to the money that was left in the drawer this morning.”
The grin on his face disappeared.
  “Money kwa?”
  “Yes money”
  “from where sir?”
“what kind of stupid question is that?” The oga was getting angry.  “Where did you keep the money you took from the accountant’s office?”
“Sir..i did not clean the office sir?” Okoro was shaking at this point.
“But you said you cleaned everywhere?”
  “Sir..no sir..”
  “Rubbish. Security!”
“No sir. I swear I didn’t clean this side.”
Two of the security men in the compound came to the office and stood waiting for the next instruction.
“What are you looking at?” the oga shouted. “Arrest this man.” He pointed at Okoro
Okoro went on his knees begging.
“Sir I think we should also apprehend Okezie,” the assistant said.
“I though you said he was sick and had to leave?” Oga asked him.
“It may have been a plan to escape.”
“So how do we get him? Who knows where he lives?”
“His address is in the file,” the secretary said.
“Go get him immediately. Try calling him first”
“No sir,” Okoro said.  “If you call him, he may know that something is wrong and may run.”
“You call him since he is your friend.”
  “Sir…”
“yes. Don’t let him know we are after him.”
Okoro brought out his phone and dialed Okezie’s number. It went through but Okezie did not pick. He dialed five more times but did not get any reply.
“Maybe he is too sick to pick.”
“Sick my foot. Guilty conscience will not let him.” Oga turned to his deputy and said, I don’t care what it takes, make sure Okezie or whatever his name is, is brought here and the money recovered.”
  “Yes sir.”
He went back into his office and banged the door.
“How much is missing?” the deputy asked the accountant.
“nine thousand five hundred naira,” the accountant replied.
  “Only?” Okoro blurted out.
“shut up,” one of the security men said and hit him on the head. “Thief.”
“It is not about how much was taken. We do not condone stealing here.” He turned to the security men and said, “keep him in holding, then you come let us go and arrest that criminal.
“Yes sir,” they replied and dragged Okoro out.
“Tell the drivers to get their vehicles ready,” he told one of the staff.”
“Yes sir,” she answered and left.
In less than five minutes, they were on their way to apprehend Okezie.

THE POWER OF PRAISE

And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD… And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 2 Chronicles 20:21-22
Worship and praise to God were part of the daily lives of the early Christians. They did it always (Acts 2:47). They praised because they had insight to the fact that praise was not ordinary. There was power in praise. Unfortunately today, we praise God occasionally or when we have only received from Him. The psalmist said, “I will praise thee, o Lord, with my whole heart I will shew forth all thy marvelous works.” (Psalm 9:1).

Going back to 2 Chronicles 20; Jehoshaphat went out against the enemy in the form of three armies – the Ammonites, the Moabites and the inhabitants of Mount Seir. These three armies had banded together against Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah. He and his people didn’t have the capacity to face them. He called the people to fast and pray. God moved upon a young man in the congregation and he prophesied saying that the Lord told them not to be afraid. He told them where the enemies were and said to go against them because the battle was the Lord’s. The next morning, they marched against the enemies and the bible says they put the praise singers in front. “Praise the Lord, for His mercy endureth forever,” they sang. As they began to sing, the Lord set ambush against the children of Ammon, Moab and Mount seir and they were smitten. Those who were remaining left all their goods and ran. Jehoshaphat and his people had victory through the manifestation of God’s power in praise. That is what praise will do in your life and circumstance if you will dedicate yourself to it today.

A NEW DAY

A NEW DAY

I imagine when I will be set free from these life challenges
Things around me are not helping matters.
People around me are not even pushing for positive changes
I wonder when the roses will blossom and when good things will manifest

Life has become lifeless. Hope has become hopeless.
As the days passes by, it pushes me even to hate more without resilience.
Standing next to the window, gazing at the little stars dazzling.
Laughing out loud behind the window, could this be happening?

It is true that lot of people were born with silver spoon.
People in this category find their way up easily than those whose low life is deeper than Lagoon
I heard a big thunder storm outside; I decided to step closer to the window.
Oh! Lo and behold, it was raining so heavily. Could rain be the replicate of life?

After some hours the rain stopped. I felt a great joy cut through me like a
knife

I heard a voice saying “your future is brighter than what you think or even imagine”.
That alone gave me hope that I will be free someday like the pigeons.
Watching the time as the clock ticks.
The clouds came down; the sun rises, hoping for a paradigm shift.

Hoping, very soon that someday the world will hear my story.
I know the struggle is reaching its own end and to God be the glory.
The definition of Life will turn out of what it was into something that will be very exciting.
Then I will know the virtue of the patience I have been exercising

Oh! Could this be the day that I have waited for?

OKEZIE

[UNEDITED...TAKE IT AS YOU SEE IT...STILL TEST RUNNING]

...continued

Days passed by and no opportunity came up. Nobody committed lose-guarding. From time to time, Nkechi came around and stirred up his passion to ‘take something’. Then one day, an opportunity presented itself.
Okezie was at work as usual when he noticed a brown envelope in a drawer. He looked around but no one was there. He touched the envelop and it felt like money. He went and locked the main entrance door so no one would come in suddenly. Then he went back and picked up the envelop. It was not sealed so he opened it and was shocked by what he saw inside it; Bundles of five hundred naira notes. He counted the bundles in a hurry, they were eight. He thought what to do. Should he take or not.
“This is the opporotunity you have been waiting for,” a voice told him. He remembered what Ebuka had suggested. Thoughts of Nkechi falling for him flashed through his mind. These made his resolve stronger. Immediately he removed some notes from some of the bundles and put into his pocket. Then he closed the envelop properly and finished the cleaning in a hurry.
Moments later, people office staff started coming. Okezie thought of how he could avoid being caught.
“If they start looking for the money,” he said to himself, “they will ask me first because I was the first to enter the office,”
He decided to feign sickness so they would let him go home. That he did. He sat at a corner and shook himself as though he had fever. He barely responded to greetings.
“What is the matter with you?” they asked him.
He managed to say he was not feeling well.
“But Oga is not here yet,” Okoro the second cleaner told him. “Maybe you will wait till he comes then he may let you go.”
“But who will clean for me in the afternoon?” Okezie asked him, with the intention of trapping him.
“Don’t worry. I will do that for you.”
Okezie turned his face away and smiled to himself. He just hoped the missing money would not be discovered till he was gone.

DAILY DEVOTION

Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God. (Isaiah 58:2). One of the things a driver of a vehicle is expected to do every morning is to spend some time checking the car, making sure the oil is enough, the lights are working, the fuel level is okay, the radiator water is enough, the brake is working, and so on. Driving out without checking those things is very risky and could lead to a serious damage or accident if something goes wrong. Checking them and not tending to faulty ones is also as risky. It is the same with the life of a believer. Spending time everyday in devotion puts you in the right shape for that day.

There are new graces made available every day. “It is of the LORD' mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (Lamentation 3:22-23). Never depend on the prayer you made yesterday to lead you today. Never depend on the grace of today to lead you tomorrow. It doesn’t work like that. The mercies of God are new every morning. When is the best time to commune with God through devotion? In answer to that, the psalmist said, “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;” (Psalm 63:1). It is best to do it in the morning when you are still fresh because chances are that if you wait till when you come back in the evening, you will be distracted by other activities like cooking, watching Television, and so on. You could also be too tired to concentrate and have your daily devotion. Among all the things you do before you step out each day, devotion should be on top of the list. You will see how your day will turn out.

A LOVING FATHER

"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God:" (1 John 3:1). God is love and the focus of His love is on His children. From the beginning of time, God has shown His love in diverse ways. Despite the unbelief, disregard and wickedness of man throughout time, God has been faithful and loving. What a Father! Our opening scripture tries to bring to our consciousness the manner of love God has for his children. Romans 5:8 goes further to describe the depth of God’s love. God’s love, who can comprehend? He loves you.

However, many believers tend to ignore this abundant love and go about their daily duties without spending a few moments to bask in the profound love of God. The bible says that the Lord is at the door of every heart knocking and whosoever opens, He will come in and fill with love. Why not open your heart today and let him in. He is your father and wants to be part of your life. It doesn’t matter what you have done. He understands and loves you despite all, just like the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-24. He is eager to take you back, bath and cloth you in mercy and grace and guide you with love. Take that step today. Welcome Him in if you have not done that before. If you have, don’t ask for anything; don’t beg for anything, just say “God I love You”.

GOD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN YOU

"Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee." (Isaiah 49:15). Have you dwelt in that situation for so long that you now wonder whether God still knows you exist. The children of Israel where in the same situation. They had so gone into idolatry that God abandoned them in the hands of their enemy. This lets you know that most times, what leaves believers in the state of Divine abandonment is their sins. “Behold, the LORD' hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” (Isaiah 59:1-2). Sin is the separator. It is not in the nature of God to abandon His children. As impossible as it is for a nursing mother to forget her suckling child, that’s how it is with God and us.

However, there are few exceptions when you are not walking in sin to the best of your ability but things still are not working in your favour. In this case, it is either that God wants you to learn to trust Him or to build you up or that the enemies are on your case. It is up to you to discover which one it is and do what you need to do. It is not a time to run from God and say God has failed you. No! It is a time to draw closer to God. When you read further down our opening scripture, you see the blessings that follow you when you hold on to God in spite of the current circumstance.“Thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will lift up mine hand…And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers…Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.” (Vs 22-25). Don’t give up! God has not forgotten you!

OKEZIE

[UNEDITED... I JUST WROTE IT ORIGINALLY FEW MINUTES AGO...STILL TEST RUNNING]

...continued...

That night, as Okezie lay on his bed, he couldn’t sleep. He kept seeing pictures of Nkechi in his mind and wondering how wonderful they would be together. He thought of other ways he could win her affection but came up with nothing concrete. After a long thinking, he made up his mind to try what Ebuka had suggested.
“Just this once,” he said to himself, rolled over on his bed and went to sleep.
The following day, Okezie was in the office early as usual to clean up the place before anybody came. There was no one in the office so as he cleaned, he carefully checked the drawers whether someone had left money there. He did not have peace of mind as he did it but the thought of Nkechi spurred him on. This made him spend more time than usual in the cleaning. Soon staff started coming. The first to enter was the office secretary.
“Good morning ma,” he greeted her in an uneasy manner.
“Morning Okezie,” she answered. “You are still cleaning?”
“I..i..” Okezie didn’t know which excuse to give. He had lost count of time as he was more focused on the search than on the cleaning.
“It is okay. I guess you came a bit later than usual today. Just hurry up before our oga comes.”
“Okay ma. Please don’t tell him.”
“Don’t worry. I will not do that.”
  “Thank you ma.”
Okezie heaved a sigh of relief and rushed his cleaning before others came. His plan did not work that day. As the nature of his job was, he hung around the office till they close, doing cleaning from time to time. All through that work day, he still battled with his mind on whether to do or not to do. When he saw how well they treated him, he decided to forget about it.
The following day, Nkechi was among the first people to come to the office. She came to see her uncle who works there. When Okezie said hi, she responded and walked past him before he could try chatting. He was angry and the desire to ‘take something’ rose up again. Nkechi did not waste time that day unlike before when she would hang around the office for a while before leaving. She barely ansered him as she left.
“She comes to collect money from her mother’s brother.” He told himself. “If I give her something, I will get her attention.” He hoped an opportunity would come out and he would ‘take something’ to impress her. He was alert but throughout that day no opportunity came up. He hissed and went home.
Days passed by and no opportunity came up. No body commited lose-guarding. From time to time, Nkechi came around and stirred up his passion to ‘take something’. Then one day, an opportunity presented itself.

OKEZIE

[UNEDITED... I JUST WROTE IT ORIGINALLY FEW MINUTES AGO...STILL TEST RUNNING]

Okezie sat on the bench in front of his house as he wondered what he would do about the situation he had found himself in.
“They will find out.” He said to himself and sighed.
It happened few months before. He had gotten a new job as a cleaner in a government office. He was excited even though the pay was small. It was enough to cater for his little needs. He lived in a one-room apartment in a family house and so he didn’t pay rent. Feeding was not a challenge also because his village was 30 minutes drive away so he went to get food stuff from time to time. There was nothing much he needed money for at that time so he worked with all his heart.
With time, he won the affection of his employer and the workers there because of his diligence to work, his cheerful disposition and his integrity. On few occasions when he had seen money or documents left carelessly, he kept them safe till the owners claimed them. They loved and trusted him. Things were going smoothly till he met Nkechi. At first sight, he fell in love with her.
Nkechi was a lovely girl, fine and elegant. She was a third year student of Microbiology in the university in town. She met Okezie when she went to the office to see her uncle. She didn’t like him but Okezie persisted and chased her. He went to the extent of getting her phone number and kept calling her. He even traced her to her hostel. She kept putting him away but he kept making advances. After weeks of trial, Nkeching was not falling for him, Okezie was frustrated.
“I don’t know what else to do,” he told Ebuka, his close friend.
“Have you bought anything for her?” Ebuka asked him.
“No. where did I see money?”
“That is the problem. Girls are moved by gifts.”
“but I don’t have the money.”
  “Borrow.”
“From who? I don’t have anybody to borrow money from.”
After a while of thinking, Ebuka whispered into his ears, “Then take it.”
                Okezie shuddered.
“From where?” he asked Ebuka, shocked.
  “From your office of course.”
“Tufiakwa. I will never do such a thing.”
“Then forget about Nkechi. You will never get her.”
That night, as Okezie lay on his bed, he couldn’t sleep. He kept seeing pictures of Nkechi and wondering how wonderful they would be together.

SHINE YOUR LIGHT

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 5:16). There are two parts to this light. One is the Light the Word shines in us and the other is us, shining the light we have in our world. So we have the duty of absorbing the light for use but it doesn’t stop there. When talking about John the Baptist, the bible says, "He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.” (John 5:35). When talking about Jesus, the bible says, “The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.” (Matthew 4:16). When talking about us, the bible says, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.” (Matthew 5:14-15).

We are required to shine the light to our world. The light does a great work in us but it doesn’t have to stop there for us. We have the duty of letting out the same light in the world. The reason for the problem the church of Jesus has is that every light is waiting for Sunday to shine and so the light in church is too much thus blinding many from the responsibilities required for progress. We neglect the fact that we get light in church to go out and shine in our families, schools, working places, businesses from Monday to Saturday. People should see Jesus wherever you are. People should experience love radiating from you. Whatever Jesus would have done if He were here, that’s what you should do. You are the light in your world. Shine!
